Week 6 and 7 Feb 15 to 27. Theme: How do humanities scholars study Poetry?
Web Quest # 3 Poetry due on March 1.
Tues Feb 15 In class: Read Litguide and How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster with respect to Poetry. What is poetry? Some basic distinctions and some examples. Homework: Re-read Aztec and Sor Juana poems. What can we figure out? Use your Litguide to help you identify elements of interest. For example, what figures of speech are used? What references are made? Who speaks, (is it always the poet)? Who is addressed? What message does the poem try to communicate? What tools are used to make the message (rhythm, structure, voice)?
In Class: We'll read these poems by Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz. What are they about? How can we study them? We'll try to develop a context for understanding these poets and their work.
Pablo Neruda
Octavio Paz
Homework: 1. Research life of these two poets. Do their life histories help us understand their poetry? Create a short biography of the two poets, which you'll use later in your Web Quest # 3 Poetry.
2. Suggest three useful links relating to Pablo Neruda or Octavio Paz and explain why you recommend them. Bring links on a sheet in MLA format (with explanations of their value) to next class.
Poetry: Some thoughts · Separate the content/message from the medium (structure) o what is the content/message? Give a brief summary paying attention to emotional mood of the speaker o what is the medium/structure? Can you describe it using appropriate terminology? Where will you find appropriate poetry terminology relating to structure of poetry? · Consider each (content/structure) separately: what can we say about each? o Content § Speaker/speakers § Mood § Audience § Characters § Plot/narrative o Structure § rhyme § rythme/meter/syllables § length (poem, lines) § vocabulary § time frame § introduction/middle/end ?
